Ulcerative Colitis: A case Study, with Mr South

Mr South's talk on his personal experience with Ulcerative Colitis was very interesting and we learnt a lot about the medical condition. It is a long-Term condition where the colon and rectum become inflamed. The colon is the large intestine and the rectum is the end of the bowel. We learnt that small ulcers can develop on the colon's lining, and can bleed and produce pus. Ulcerative Colitis affects women just as much as men and it can develop at any age. However, it's mostly diagnosed in people from 15 to 25 years old. Doctors normally use medication (steroids) to treat Ulcerative Colitis, but if the medication is not effective then surgery is performed and we were shown diagrams of the surgeries. The small intestine will either be diverted out of an opening in the abdomen, or used to create an internal pouch. Some people may live with a pouch for the rest of their lives.
